Telling the story behind Tapas

A literary cafe by the British Museum, in London may not be the natural setting to discuss Spanish culinary traditions and trend. Nevertheless I cannot miss this opportunity to share a piece of cake and a good coffee with food writer Vicky Hayward, as she is on a quick layover in the city.

Since a recent visit to Madrid I have been fascinated by the development of Spanish food, and in particular the tapas phenomenon. Coming from a traditional Italian background, I find the idea of drinking and eating standing up a bit foreign, but I am about to learn more. Read more »

Summer Camp in Paris

Last summer we had a client approach us with a new idea. She was spending nearly a month in Paris with her children and had heard about our Family Program of walks designed for kids and led by museum educators. We normally think of these as tours—one-off experiences that families enjoy during a visit. But what if, this client asked, she string together many of these—including a number of customized walks—into a kind of immersive, cultural summer camp. Wow, we thought, what a great idea. Off the Beaten Path: Tours in the Public Interest

At Context, our philosophy has always been about promoting and protecting the cultural heritage in each of the cities in which we operate. This heritage most familiarly comes in the form of monumental sites such as the Colosseum or iconic topics such Gothic architecture in Paris. But it also exists in smaller, sometimes more interesting, off the beaten path sites such as the Croton Aqueduct in New York or topics such as Thomas Jefferson’s time in Paris. Very often, however, these less well known aspects of a city’s heritage can be overlooked by enthusiastic visitors and busy locals.

The Case for Madrid (Context City of Literature 2011)

All this month on the Context blog, we’ll be deciding the Context ‘City of Literature’ for 2011. Our docents in different cities will be posting the reasons why their city should win the title. Keep visiting the blog to see what they have to say, and come back at the end of the month for your chance to vote for the best city (and win some great prizes).

Let’s start off with José F. Grave de Peralta, and his reasons why Madrid should win the title…

Probably no modern travel guide to Madrid would forget to send us to the Café de Gijón, where Spanish literati from the 1880s until well after the time of Francisco Franco would talk about books and poetry while sipping their jerez and café cortado. But no visit to Madrid would be complete without a broader understanding of the importance of letters in this complex European country. Read more »

Our favorite exhibitions opening in Madrid this Fall

From November 8th, the Prado Museum is showing a selection of works from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, including paintings by Rembrandt, Renoir, jewelry pieces that once belonged to the Tsar, and designs by Faberge. This unmissable exhibition will offer the opportunity to see one of Titian’s last works, Saint Sebastian, as well as the terracotta study for The Ecstasy of St. Theresa by Baroque sculptor Bernini, and modern masterpieces such as the Absinthe Drinker, painted by the young Picasso during his stay in Paris. The exhibition ends next March 25th. What’s on in Madrid-early Spring 2011

There are some very exciting exhibitions taking place or coming soon to Madrid.

Most people flock to the Reina Sofia Museum primarily in order to see Picasso’s Guernica, but this huge Arts Centre holds events and exhibitions that usually go unnoticed by the average visitor. If you have the time, make sure to see the current exhibition on the concept of Atlas, geography and the theory of Art History envisaged by Aby Warburg, one of the seminal figures in this discipline. The exhibition runs until 28 March. Read more »
