About the Carmignano Excursion Walk in Florence
Tucked into a valley just north west of Florence, lies the untouched Carmignano region. Frequented by the Medici family since Renaissance times, the area is known for its wine production and its untouched beauty. During this excursion, we will have the opportunity to experience the fruits of the Carmignano, most notably, its wine, olive oil and cheese production, during a pleasant half-day excursion into the Tuscan countryside.
Carmignano wine, one of Italy's oldest wines, bears the prestigious DOCG label that strictly enforces the region in which specific wines can be produced. The first document that mentions the wine dates back the 14th century when Sir Lapo Mazzei bought fifteen loads of Carmignano wine, paying four times the average price of other wines of that time. The wine was first protected with zoning laws put into effect by the Medici family, then the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, in the early 18th century and has been closely guarded ever since.

After a quick drive from your Florence hotel, we will arrive in the Carmignano. We will first visit the charming city center, whose San Michele and San Francesco church houses one of Pontormo's greatest works, Visitation. We will then head to a private estate, located in the heart of the surrounding countryside, surveying the grounds where the local wine is grown and the ancient cellars where it is stored, and where we will have a tasting of select bottles. We will also get to witness the process of olive oil production and visit the estate's frantoio, the traditional olive press used for making olive oil. Some additional Tuscan specialties such as grappa and pecorino cheeses may also be included depending on the availability of the day.
At the end of this sensorial excursion into a corner of Tuscany rarely frequented, allowing for an undiluted experience with its landscape, people and products, your docent will accompany you back to your hotel.
The price of this excursion includes round-trip car transportation and wine tastings at the estate.
This excursion is priced for four people. We can accommodate up to six, for an extra cost of 150 euro per person.
