About the Greenwich Village Walk in New York

Greenwich Village has always been a place apart from the rest of New York. Not only does the city's grid find exception here; but the residents of this hamlet within the city have always defined themselves by their own sense of community. During this three-hour walking seminar of Greenwich Village we will explore the history of enigmatic neighborhood, from its Native American roots, through the Dutch tobacco farms and the English estates of "Green Wich," to the Bohemian emergence of Greenwich Village.

Hamlet Within a City

In the company of an urban historian, this walk will focus on the early history of the Village, though certain detours and tangents will bring us in to contact with the 20th and 21st centuries. We'll explore the early settlements and trace the topography of old rivers; we'll consider the human scale of the buildings and winding streets.
