Paris will always be considered a top culinary destination, but global innovations and outside influences are influencing (and shaking up) culinary trends in Paris. American chefs and their inspiration have become vital ingredients in this new recipe. You will sample this evolution firsthand over the course of this unique dinner at Hidden Kitchen, while David and Meg will provide valuable insight into the changes taking place in French cuisine over the past few years and the latest gastronomic trends in Paris.
For many, David Lebovitz needs no introduction. David's impressive culinary career includes many years in the pastry department at Chez Panisse in Berkeley and the achievement of five cookbooks and a recent memoir The Sweet Life in Paris. After moving to Paris in 2002, he now whets appetites the world over with his popular culinary blog. David's newest cookbook Ready for Dessert: My Best Recipes will be released in April. Meg Zimbeck, one of our Paris culinary docents, is a travel and food writer, contributing to various publications including the Wall Street Journal, Saveur, Budget Travel and BlackBook guides. She is also the editor of Paris by Mouth (www.parisbymouth.com), the web's most comprehensive and collaborative site about food and wine in Paris.
While the location of the Hidden Kitchen may still be a secret, its existence is certainly not. This innovative supper club has been praised by Food & Wine Magazine, the New York Times, Travel + Leisure, and hundreds of happy food bloggers. Within a sprawling private apartment near the Palais Royal, two Americans (note: they're not Seattle natives) take a twice-weekly break from their day jobs in culinary and restaurant consulting in order to share their gastronomic gifts with a group of no more than sixteen "friends." The waiting list to attend a Hidden Kitchen dinner is usually several months long, but Braden and Laura have agreed to organize a multi-course feast especially for Context, inspired by seasonal ingredients from local markets and paired with perfectly selected wines.
Dinner will begin with an apéritif and amuses-bouche. Over the course of many dishes - each one explained by the chef who created it - David and Meg will lead through group in culinary conversation. Together we will discuss the Paris restaurant scene, cultural differences relating to food and wine, and what it's like for Americans to cook and write in Paris. When they can, Braden and Laura will escape from the kitchen to share their inspirations and thoughts on their delectable creations. They will also tell us about the exciting story of creating the Hidden Kitchen.
By the time that dessert and coffee are served, you will have gained an insider's perspective on today's exciting culinary scene in Paris. You will also receive a copy of David's book of memoirs as a souvenir from this very special evening.
