About the Mosaic Workshop Walk in Naples
Mosaic is an art form that has a long history in the Campania region. Beginning with Greek settlers in the 6th century B.C. and blossoming during the age of the Roman Empire, mosaic was used in both decorative and practical modes – from the floral and geometric motifs in private homes to religious imagery of god and protectors in shrines. The ruins of cities like Pompeii and Herculaneum thankfully preserved a rich collection of period mosaics (now housed in Naples’ Archaeological Museum) that remain testament to their importance in daily life. Our Mosaic Workshop, held in the private home studio of an award-winning mosaic artist, is a hands-on approach to learning about mosaic- from both a historical, as well as a practical perspective, which will allow for a deeper knowledge and appreciation of this fascinating and delicate art.

The setting of the artist’s studio is the lovely countryside of Salerno, very close to the famed Amalfi Coast and looking out over the bright blue Mediterranean. The workshop begins with an introduction to the medium of mosaic and its ancient roots. Then, the hands-on experience begins with sketching the design of your mosaic and the choosing of the tesserae, the colored tiles that make up the mosaic panel. You are free to take inspiration from traditional mosaic motifs, your natural surroundings, as well as getting guidance from the mosaic artist on creating a personal piece. You will be followed closely through every step of the process and at the end of the workshop you will have a self-made masterpiece to bring home.
Like our Fresco Workshop in Florence and our Drawing Workshop in Rome, our Mosaic Workshop offers the perfect contrast to our in depth, thematic walks of archaeology, history and art – a unique mental and creative exercise, which allows you to delve deeper into the visual culture of a people.
