Tour Description
The immense Kunsthistorisches Museum stands alongside the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the British Museum as one of the great art collections in the world. In this Kunsthistorisches Museum tour, we'll join a local art historian to explore historical objects and artworks from the past seven millennia, from ancient Egypt to 20th-century Vienna Secession.

Kunsthistorisches Museum Tour with an Expert

Our visit is designed as an overview or "crash course,” with time spent in several of the major collections. One particular focus will be the picture gallery, featuring 16th and 17th-century paintings from Venice, the Netherlands, and Germany, including masters such as Titian, Vermeer, van Eyck, and Dürer. Inspired by the masterpieces hanging before us, we’ll discuss the visible differences between northern and southern European painting styles. We’ll also look at how and why the ruling Habsburgs collected certain works and will cast our imaginations outwards to reflect on the collection’s greater symbolism for imperial Austria. (Note, we discuss this topic further on our Schönbrunn Palace Tour.)

Navigating the Galleries

As an introduction to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, this walk and its route will be organically shaped by your preferences. From day to day, tour to tour, the specific course will shift according to the desires of the group and the scholarly interests of your guide—be it Greek and Roman antiquities, coins, decorative arts or large-scale paintings. Regardless of where our feet take us, we'll emerge with a deeper familiarity of the museum's rich collection and its symbolism during the centuries-long rule of the Habsburgs.

My husband and I had a very special tour of the Kunsthistorisches museum with Reinhard. We were looking forward to our first visit to this museum. Our tour focused on the picture gallery. Reinhard took us through a 2 1/2 hour tour that covered an amazing amount of our special favorite artists and works of art, including those of Durer, Holbein, Bruegel, Velazquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer and so many more.cc Reinhard was very versed in art and provided an excellent tourccc
Irene was outstanding. Spent the 2.5 hours expertly. Fun balance between history and art. Was able to entertain both my daughter and I which is hard to do. Highly recommend.
Reinhard was fantastic! We started with the High Renaissance style in Florence (Raphael, Andrea del Sarto, Correggio) then onto the Venetian school (Titian and Tintoretto) and then to Milan and Rome (Caravaggio). Also saw the Vanitas paintings (Antonio de Pereda). We then moved on to Flemish Baroque (Rubens, van Dyck), Dutch Golden Age portrait painters (Franz Hals, Jan Steen, Rembrandt, Vermeer) and finally, the Northern Renaissance painters (Albrecht Durer and Pieter Brughel the Elder). I found this artistic journey well thought out and explained and the choices brilliant. I only wish that I had had more time to do other museum tours with him. As dessert, he suggested we visit the Kunstkammer to see the famous Saliera- the 16th c golden salt cellar. Glad we did and wish we'd had more time to explore.I have visited world museums over the last 60 years but this visit still broadened my horizon. A must-do with Reinhard.
