Florence is, perhaps, the premier city in the world for cutting edge art restoration and conservation and is the foremost training ground for aspiring restorers. So, it's little surprise that this Out of Context event (scheduled for July 8, 2009) will give participants an in-depth understanding of the tools, techniques, and politics of modern conservation, a knowledge that will help us further appreciate the critical position of Florence and other cultural centers around the world.
Behind the scenes in the Florentine art world
During the course of this behind the scenes walk, we will visit two important Florentine projects currently being restored; the Tribuna of the Uffizi, the octagonal display room that has held for over four centuries many of the masterpieces of the Medici grand ducal collection, and a series of frescoes in the San Antonio cloister of the San Marco complex. Context will be hosting this special event in conjunction with Friends of Florence, one of the most prolific and dynamic non-profit art restoration organizations in the world.
We will begin by introducing the entity of Friends of Florence, founded in 2002, a little more in depth; how it was created, why, and how they choose projects from the countless works of art in dire need for restoration. Some of their past projects include the sculptures in the Loggia dei Lanzi, facing Piazza Signoria, and the 22 paintings that flank the David in the Accademia. We will then head over to the first of their projects that we will visit during the course of the walk- the Tribuna of the Uffizi. Here, we will get a behind the scenes look at the ongoing work, observe the restorers and learn about the fragile techniques and instruments needed to undertake such a delicate job.
On our way to the cloister of San Marco, we will discuss the current state of Florence's artistic heritage and how it is being compromised by mass tourism and environmental effects. Arriving at San Marco, we will observe the San Antonio cloister where lunettes, medallions and columns designed by the architect Michelozzo are being painstakingly restored. As in the Tribuna, we will discuss the historical significance of this space and the steps taken by Friends of Florence to “adopt” it.
Our docent for this walk will be an art historian and Friends of Florence advisor. His insider knowledge of both the art and restoration worlds will guide us on this discovery of the fragile nature of Florence's treasures.
This event will take place on July 8th at 9:30AM.
