The Vasari Corridor was originally built for the Medici family, allowing them to pass from the Uffizi to Palazzo Pitti without having to mix with the common Florentines. The corridor remains a testimony to the 16th century Medici family in their quest to transform Florence into a quasi-monarchical society. Giorgio Vasari, a close friend of Michelangelo Buonarotti, was best known for his work inside the Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Cancelleria (in Rome), and his written biography of artists, which laid the foundation for Renaissance art history.
During our time together, we'll begin with a short introduction to both Giorgio Vasari and our topic of discussion, the Vasari Corridor. After studying the corridor from the exterior, we'll make our way into the Uffizi Museum, where we'll discover the corridor's interior. We'll spend about an hour inside the Vasari Corridor, discussing the architecture and collection. This is a very unique opportunity for Context clients who will be in Florence at this time, as the corridor is opened by special appointment only.
