Storied Mount Vesuvius has dominated overlooked the landscape and life of the Gulf of Naples since the time of the Greeks and Romans. Some of the best-preserved ruins of the latter civilization are found on its slopes, including not only Pompeii but the less well known (but equally important) sites of Herculaneum, Oplontis, Stabia, and Villa Regina. Many of these cities, settlements, and villas were frozen in time by Vesuvius' eruptions.
Vesuvius itself, the only active Volcano on the European mainland, is a fantastic site of historic, geologic, and natural interest--a perfect place for an afternoon picnic.
Besides our standard trips to Pompeii, Context Naples offers a full-day excursion to Vesuvius, combining a morning trip to one archaeological site with an afternoon visit to Mt. Vesuvius itself. Your docent for the day will be an art historian or archaeologist who possesses a deep knowledge of the individual sites and the overall context of the Campania region during antiquity and its relationship to Rome.

Note: The hike on top of Mt. Vesuvious is a leasurly one, however the terrain is uneven and the altitude high. We discourage clients with walking difficulties from requesting this excursion. It is possible for us to arrange this itinerary for clients arriving from Rome by train. For this, we recommend that you take the early Eurostar at 7:45 AM from Rome Termini.
