The Galleria Borghese was originally designed and built as a casino, or veranda, in the extensive Baroque gardens of the Borghese family. Today it's fantastic collection of art, featuring some of the most important works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, comprise one of the top museums in Europe. The Galleria itself is adorned with ancient statuary and bas reliefs, as was standard for villas and palazzi at the time. All of the decorative work has been lovingly restored, the fruit of several years' labor. (The gardens flanking the Galleria have also been restored. CR can organize a tour of those. See our Tours section.) Inside the Galleria are masterworks by Caravaggio, Titian, and Bernini, as well as Canova's statue of Paolina Borghese who scandalized Rome by posing in the nude.
