Eat Like the Romans, with Maureen Fant
DURATION: 90 minutes, afternoons only
PRICE: €280 per group

Many visitors to Rome miss out on the city's gastronomic pleasures because they don't know what they are or where to look for them, and we think that's a shame. Accordingly, Maureen Fant, an American food writer who has lived in Rome for more than 25 years, offers an intensive 90-minute tutorial designed to cover the basics of eating in Rome. Topics, aimed at both first-timers and repeat visitors, will include:
- what's in season (don't order strawberries in January or artichokes in July)- what's traditional and what's new (stewed oxtail and chocolate boutiques, respectively)
- what to drink in Rome (Lazio may offer some interesting surprises that weren't available on your last trip)
- the types of eating place (do you know what an osteria is?)
- what to order (using real Roman menus)
- how to tip and, most important, where to eat.
As time permits, Maureen will help you tailor a dining plan for your stay in Rome, from elegant dinners to picnics in the park. The tutorial, which includes a glass of Frascati and some minor nibbles, takes place in Maureen's home, near the Colosseum, and in good weather on her wonderful terrace.
Maureen lives on the fourth storey (five by American counting) of a building without an elevator. The apartment is air-conditioned. Please remember that this tour takes place in our docent’s home, undoubtedly destined for other uses soon after the scheduled end of the tour. Do try to leave as punctually as possible.
NOTE: This itinerary is usually organized in the evenings, with a start time of 5 pm.
