Pompeii (from Rome, by car)

This is a 12-hour excursion down to Pompeii from Rome with a car service and in the company of a trained archaeologist or classical historian. Although you will spend a good time in the car, you will be in the company of a scholar who will re-create for you the ancient context of Pompeii and prepare you for the excursion. (The trip home is a de-briefing of sorts.)

The exact itinerary depends on the day, what's open at the site, and the specific interests and expertise of the docent. Usually, we spend 2-3 hours at Pompeii, including a visit to the Villa of Mysteries. Then, we drive back to Naples for lunch, and make a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Naples, where most of the treasures from Pompeii are now housed. However, since this is a private excursion, we can also make a side trip to Herculanum, Oplontis, or any of the other archaeological sites on the slope of Mt. Vesuvius instead of heading to the Archeaological Museums. But be assured that the site will be explored to a very deep level.
