Ruth was incredibly knowledgeable and excited about sharing the history and stories behind the history of Jews in London. Getting a feeling for the neighborhoods and just how hard life was for the community was deeply moving. Ruth painted a clear picture of life and how the Jews of London managed to make it through with hope and faith. There are 2 suggestions I would make. The first is for Ruth to have all of the pictures and written materials she shared in a more organized format. She had great reference material, but it lost some impact because of the way she had it in her binder. Perhaps having it in order on an IPad or on full sheets filed in the binder by topic would help. The other suggestion is to add a brief break for a beverage and a chance to refresh to take it all in.
It was a lovely tour that uncovered less known narratives in my favorite part of London - the city edge between the corporation and East London’s most fashinable and artistic end. I loved that Ruth showed us Tracey Emin’s house in East London. The Hougenots neighbourhood was a treat and the tour was a wonderful journey into Jewish history presented with warmth, knowledge and insiders sensitivity. I loved the readings from Ruth’s favorite books.
Our docent is fantastic. It was clear that she knew her subject and loved it. Hat's off.
