We got lucky! Our guide, Tetsu met us at our hotel to guide us through a very fascinating day touring 3 older and very different Tokyo neighborhoods. He was very easy to understand as he had lived in the US for several years and spoke excellent English as well as Japanese. This is an important consideration for an 8-hour tour. He brought keen insight into the history of these neighborhoods along with how they are currently changing and the tensions they are experiencing. We stopped for a delicious lunch together and Tetsu helped us with our travel logistics for the rest of our journey within Japan. At the end of the day Tetsu returned us to our hotel lobby, something many other guides did not do. Our learning that day helped us notice things in Tokyo we would not have realized otherwise. Thank you Tetsu.
We had a very fun and filling morning with Susan at this famous market. We started with a brief history of the area and then proceeded to the crowded market streets. Susan knew the market and the vendors well and gave us good explanations of what we were seeing. She was always sensitive to our comfort and timed when to stop and sit or eat. She pointed out trusted vendors for snacks and other delicacies in case we wanted to purchase for our travels. Finally, we shared a delicious sushi lunch at a “merry-go-round” sushi cafe in the market. Thank you Susan!
When we met Olesia we indicated we had already been to Meiji Jingu and, since Omotesando would not open until later in the morning, we asked to substitute the nearby Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. Olesia was completely amenable to our request and we set off for the garden. Little did we know that in addition to being a knowledgable guide for the shrine and architecture tour she would also be informed and passionate about the gardens. We had a beautiful morning together strolling through the greenhouses and the Japanese gardens. She was able to explain some of the plants to us and how they grow both in Japan and her home country. Thank you Olesia.
