Loved hearing from Marco about how Venice became Venice and what efforts (both successful and wrong-headed) are being made to preserve this fine city.
Of all the Context tours I've done, this was the best! Gianmarco's expertise on the ecology of Venice is outstanding. He explanations of the multiple factors threaten Venice were detailed and very clear, and the tour through San Polo gave us many excellent examples of the impacts of rising water and the methods for protecting the city. Gianmarco was extremely personable and an excellent teacher!
Of the three tours I took with Context in Venice, this was the most mind blowing. Francesco was very well prepared with maps and charts. The contrast of ancient Venetians working with the Lagoon to the more modern problems was amazing. Now I can read algae layers to see how high the tides typically go. And the origin of the word "malaria" in context of a salt marsh makes for a good story. Francesco even managed to point out architectural details of the buildings the Venetians used to deal with muddy foundations, stone that is impervious to water, and the effects of salt water on brick. Francesco covered all of this (and a lot more) in two hours, clearly, without rushing or lecturing. Bravo!
