Ypres, the French name for the city also known as Ieper in Dutch, is inextricably intertwined with the destruction and huge loss of life in nearby battlefields during WW1. A visit to Ypres is incomplete without seeing the In Flanders Field Museum or Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing, a structure commemorating the unknown British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in and around Ypres during the war.

Upon arriving, however, you'll discover that Ypres offers much more than just a launching pad to memorials outside the city. Its medieval streets and reconstructed Gothic cathedral stand testament to its former status as an important commercial center, most notably as a central crossroads in the once-flourishing linen trade with England. Explore Ypres' unique role in these pivotal historical eras on a Context private and small group guided tours.

Christophe is an excellent guide; very passionate about the events of WWI in the Western Front that took place in his native Flanders and so dynamic that the day tour really felt like a breeze. We appreciated his knowledge of the battles and the cruelties of the war along with his candid stories of some of the protagonists. We left Ypres with more insights and a clear picture of The Great War.
