About Sean
Sean received his PhD in Art History from UCLA in June 2006. A Fellow of the American Academy in Rome and the first recipient of an AAR-sponsored fellowship at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, his dissertation concerned modern Italian architecture in East and North Africa. His first book, Flames of Devotion, formed the basis of an exhibition of South Asian ritual sculpture he curated at the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles. He is published widely and currently is completing two books of essays and photographs concerning modern Italian architecture. Sean graduated with honors from Cornell and Princeton Universities in architecture and history of architecture. As a practicing architect, his interest in the conservation of vernacular architectures has led him to work in West Africa, South and Southeast Asia and most recently, Afghanistan. Sean is a keen observer of Rome’s secret spaces.
