Our Budapest Castle District tour with Greg Agoston was exceptional and one of the highlights of our visit to Budapest. Greg has an impressive depth of knowledge that goes far beyond simply identifying landmarks and recounting dates. As we explored the Castle District, he brought Budapest’s cultural buildings and architecture to life, explaining not only what we were seeing, but how the buildings, monuments, churches, and public spaces reflect the different periods of Hungarian history. What particularly distinguished Greg was his ability to place everything within a much broader historical and geopolitical context. His detailed explanation of Hungary’s geopolitical history—from its early foundations and centuries of competing influences through the Habsburg era, the two World Wars, the Soviet period, and modern Hungary—gave us a much deeper understanding of the country and its people. He connected political history, culture, religion, architecture, and geography in a way that was fascinating, thoughtful, and easy to follow. Greg was engaging, personable, and extremely generous with his knowledge. He welcomed questions and adapted the discussion to our interests rather than simply following a memorized tour script. If you are looking for more than a standard sightseeing tour and genuinely want to understand Budapest, Hungarian history, its remarkable architecture, and Hungary’s place within the larger history of Central Europe, I highly recommend Greg Agoston. An outstanding guide and an excellent experience.
