Tour Description
Meet Livia, your Rome private guide to the archaeology of the Eternal City.

Livia obtained a degree in Archaeology at La Sapienza University of Rome and has a Master's degree in the History and Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Rome ‘Roma Tre’. Her main field of interest is ancient Roman topography and early Christian architecture; however, she is an accomplished scholar whose teaching ability extends to Renaissance and Baroque Rome.

One of Context’s family experts, Livia enjoys exploring with travelers of all ages. As a native Roman, she is very enthusiastic in sharing the deep love and knowledge she has for her hometown with clients.

An Inspired Itinerary - Ostia Antica in Depth

Join Livia at Ostia Antica, her favorite site in ancient Rome.  On this full-day exploration of the complete site, Livia will share not only her knowledge but her passion for this remarkable example of a Roman port city.  She’ll also share insider tips on the archeology of ancient Rome while enjoying a local lunch together.

The day will begin with a private van transfer from your accommodation in central Rome and a scenic drive towards the coast to the site of Ostia Antica which lies about forty minutes west of the city center. At this amazing archaeological park, which rivals Pompeii, we will witness the development of a Roman town from its beginnings as a military garrison protecting the salt pans at the mouth of the Tiber River, to the home of the warehouses of the city, and into the luxury summer estates of the Patricians. Through these diverse sites, Livia will provide you with a deeper understanding of the changes that occurred in Roman society through the centuries.

On our return trip to Rome, again by private van, we will make a special stop at the Museum of Civilizations to see the marvelous Opus Sectile House. Excavated in the 1930’s, l’Edificio con Opus Sectile was a Domus or house in the Porta Marina area of the ancient city of Ostia. Constructed in the 4th Century BCE, the intricate marble inlaid walls are meticulously preserved and reconstructed in this remarkable museum installation.

We’ll leave our day with Livia with a complete understanding not only of Ostia Antica and its role in Roman commerce and trade but we will also have a deeper appreciation for daily life in the ancient world which will complement the rest of our time in Rome.
