An excellent audio guide. Loved it.

The tour was informational but barely included any "stories" so it was not all that engaging or interesting.

This is such a rich historic area that it deserves more New York history or more Hamilton history or both. I would have liked more assisted visualization of the place as it looked in 1776. Best moments were Fraunces Tavern and St Paul’s.

Self-Guided Audio Tours

Self-guided audio tours combine the freedom of independent travel with the insight of an expert guide. Instead of following a group or keeping to a fixed schedule, you explore cities, museums, neighborhoods, and historic landmarks at your own pace while listening to expert commentary that automatically plays as you walk. Context Travel's self-guided audio tours are narrated by historians, archaeologists, architects, chefs, and local Experts who reveal the stories behind the places you're visiting. Powered by VoiceMap's GPS technology, each tour follows your location, allowing you to pause for lunch, linger over a favorite view, or explore a side street before continuing whenever you're ready. Whether you're discovering ancient ruins in Rome, wandering London's neighborhoods, exploring Parisian cafés, or navigating one of the world's great museums, our audio tours help you understand what you're seeing without committing to a group tour or rigid itinerary.

Self-guided audio tours are GPS-enabled walking experiences that let you explore independently while listening to expert commentary through your phone. As you move through the route, the narration automatically plays at the appropriate locations, creating an experience that feels like walking with a knowledgeable guide beside you.

Unlike traditional group tours, self-guided audio tours let you choose your own pace. Pause to take photographs, spend longer in a museum gallery, stop for a coffee, or revisit a favorite site without worrying about keeping up with a group.

Context's audio tours are powered by VoiceMap, whose GPS technology keeps the narration synchronized with your location while our Experts provide the historical, cultural, and artistic interpretation that brings each destination to life.
Self-guided audio tours are ideal for travelers who value flexibility without sacrificing depth.

They’re particularly well suited if you:
  •  Prefer exploring on your own schedule
  •  Want expert insight without joining a group
  •  Like stopping whenever something catches your attention
  •  Need an experience that fits around other plans
  •  Want a cost-effective way to understand a city
  •  Prefer to revisit sections or listen again later

Instead of choosing between a guidebook and a guided tour, a self-guided audio tour offers the strengths of both: expert storytelling, complete independence, and a more affordable way to explore with context.
Context offers self-guided audio tours across dozens of destinations, covering some of the world's most celebrated cities, museums, monuments, and neighborhoods.

Explore ancient Rome through the Colosseum and Roman Forum, wander the food markets of Paris, discover London's historic streets, navigate the storied streets of Florence, experience Kyoto's temples, or uncover the stories hidden throughout New York's neighborhoods.

Each experience is built around a clear narrative, helping you understand not only what you're seeing but why it matters.
Many audio guides simply identify landmarks or describe what you're looking at.

Context takes a different approach.

Our tours are written and narrated by historians, archaeologists, architects, chefs, and local Experts who connect individual sites into a larger story. Rather than presenting isolated facts, they explain how people, ideas, art, politics, religion, and everyday life shaped the places you're exploring.

VoiceMap provides the technology that keeps the experience seamless. Context provides the expertise that makes it memorable.

Together, they create self-guided audio tours that offer both independence and genuine understanding.

What is a self-guided audio tour?

A self-guided audio tour is a GPS-enabled walking experience that lets you explore independently while listening to expert narration through your smartphone. The commentary automatically plays as you reach different locations along the route.

How do Context's audio tours work?

Context's audio tours are powered by VoiceMap. After downloading the tour, simply follow the route using the VoiceMap app. GPS technology automatically triggers narration at the appropriate locations, allowing you to focus on your surroundings instead of your screen.

Do I need an internet connection?

VoiceMap allows tours to be downloaded before you begin, so you can continue listening even when mobile service is limited. We recommend downloading your tour before setting out.

Are self-guided audio tours better than guided tours?

It depends on how you like to travel. Guided tours are ideal for travelers who enjoy asking questions and participating in live conversation. Self-guided audio tours offer greater flexibility, allowing you to start whenever you like, pause whenever curiosity strikes, and explore at your own pace while still benefiting from expert interpretation.

What makes Context's audio tours different?

Every tour is narrated by a Context Expert—including historians, archaeologists, architects, chefs, and other specialists—with deep knowledge of the destination. Rather than simply describing landmarks, they explain the history, culture, art, and ideas that shaped them.

Can I stop and restart my tour?

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of a self-guided audio tour is flexibility. You can pause whenever you like, spend extra time at a site, stop for a meal, or resume later without losing your place.
