Carlos Rojas

Art Historian in Bern
About Carlos

My name is Carlos. I’m originally from Bogotá and have been based in Bern since 2018. I’m a cultural researcher and historian with a PhD in History, specializing in Latin American art and imagery. I’m also the author of several novels, as well as works on art criticism and history. My research focuses on images and material culture, which I love combining with my passion for travel and street photography. Over the years, I’ve lived in Bogotá, Florence, and Bern, spending much of my time walking, observing, and learning from the streets, which have become one of my primary sources of research.

Since 2019, I’ve been teaching at the University of Bern’s Institute of Art History. In addition to my academic and literary work, I also guide tours through the historical center of Bern. Leading others through the city has deepened my understanding of its rich and fascinating history, this is why I’m always seeking to understand how history unfolds behind the streets, architecture, landscapes, and the traces that can be found while walking.

When I guide a tour, I’m always looking for something new myself — discovering unexpected paths, images, and corners of the city that help reconstruct stories from the past. That’s why I don’t think of my tours as “guided” tours, but more as open conversations shaped by curiosity, walking, and keen observation.
