Meet Your Expert
Irene

Born and raised in Milan, Irene moved to Scotland in 2009. She achieved a PhD in Art History at the University of Edinburgh in 2015. Her doctoral thesis looked at the artistic patronage of the Vespucci family in fifteenth-century Florence. Irene currently works at the University of Edinburgh. She loves art, coffee, yoga, and the sun – not necessarily in this order. Despite her reluctance to sit on planes, she is a travel addict and she hopes to tour the world one day. Edinburgh stole her heart and it is now her home.

We will explore some of Glasgow’s landmarks, including the medieval Cathedral, the University, the mural trail, and the Necropolis cemetery. The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and the Willow Tea Rooms will give us the chance to appreciate the city’s architecture and art collections, from the Glasgow Boys to the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The River Clyde and the Riverside Museum will give us the opportunity to dive into the history of Glasgow and see how it developed from a provincial town into a major industrial city.

Led by an expert on Renaissance art and history, Irene Mariani, this lecture will introduce the history and highlights of Glasgow. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the history and architecture of Scotland's biggest city.
