Miami, a former swamp settled by the indigenous Tequesta Indians, grew out of a vision in the late 19th century by local developer Julia Tuttle, who was later called "The Mother of Miami." Her dream of a big city by the Miami River was realized—the city and its metropolitan area ballooned from 1,000 residents in 1890 to over 6 million in 2017. Miami's drastic growth has been fueled by many immigrant groups, including Cuban exiles starting in the 1960s, and it was nicknamed the Capital of Latin America for its large Hispanic population. The city is also renowned for its art deco and Mimo (Miami Modernist) architectural styles, most visible on the palm-lined streets of Miami Beach. Explore glamorous Miami with Context's private and small group guided tours.

Annette was terrific! She was so knowledgeable. Wonderfully friendly and energetic. A delight to be with and learn from. I've been to South Beach many times yet had missed some of the Beach's many treasures.
