Meet Your Expert
Irene

Born and raised in Milan, Irene moved to Scotland in 2009. She achieved a PhD in Art History at the University of Edinburgh in 2015. Her doctoral thesis looked at the artistic patronage of the Vespucci family in fifteenth-century Florence. Irene currently works at the University of Edinburgh. She loves art, coffee, yoga, and the sun – not necessarily in this order. Despite her reluctance to sit on planes, she is a travel addict and she hopes to tour the world one day. Edinburgh stole her heart and it is now her home.

In the Old Town, once the buzzing heart of the medieval city, we’ll discuss the history of Edinburgh castle, the Royal Mile, and the picturesque Victoria Street. We’ll walk through an historical graveyard and beautiful public parks such as Holyrood Park and Princes Street Gardens. In the New Town, we’ll discuss how neoclassical architecture, visible in the succession of streets, crescents, and terraces, heavily re-shaped Edinburgh in the 18th century, and contributed to the city being labeled the ‘Athens of the North.' We’ll also stretch all the way to the Dean Village, one of Edinburgh’s hidden gems.

Led by an expert on Renaissance art and history, Irene Mariani, this lecture will introduce the history, highlights, and hidden gems of Edinburgh. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the history, architecture and tales that contributed to make Edinburgh one of the most fascinating and intriguing cities of Europe.

Appealing presenter who covered subject thoroughly.
Very informative, the only comment is that the guide was a little difficult to listen to. I was rather hoping to hear an authentic Scottish voice giving me authentic pronunciations of the places.
