Lecture Description
Based on Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling novel Dragonfly in Amber, the second season of the hit television show Outlander relates the adventures of time-traveler Claire Randall and her Highlander husband Jamie Fraser as they attempt to change history and avert the disastrous 1745 Jacobite rebellion. Although the events of the series take the intrepid characters across Europe, most of it was actually filmed in Scotland, and its thirteen episodes feature several of the country’s most beautiful and historical monuments. It is these monuments – which include castles, stately homes, a cathedral, and a royal palace - that will be explored in this lecture.
Meet Your Expert
Alan

Alan was born and raised in Scotland but has spent most of his adult life in London. Having achieved an MA in Art History at Glasgow University, he worked for many years in the art world at both an international auction house and an antique dealer. He then returned to academia, achieving an MA in Classical Civilisation in 2011, and later completed a Ph.D. in which he analyzed eighteenth-century attitudes towards the ancient Roman world. Elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 2017, he published his first book 'Classical Caledonia' in 2020. His latest book, 'Walking the Antonine Wall', recounts his journey on foot along a Roman frontier in Scotland.

Building upon Alan Montgomery’s lecture From Lallybroch to Cranesmuir: The Real History of Scotland’s ‘Outlander’ Locations, this lecture will focus on the many fascinating locations which appear in the second season of Outlander. It will feature both real historical sites with Jacobite associations, including the atmospheric battlefield of Culloden, and locations such as the ancient Dean Castle and stately Drumlanrig Castle which represent the fictional places invented by Gabaldon herself. As we shall discover, the elegant gardens of Drummond Castle and the grand Gosford House stood in for the Palace of Versailles, while the atmospheric interiors of Callendar House and Falkland Palace were used to film some of the key scenes in this dramatic second series.

Hosted by a Scottish historian, this lecture will provide an introduction for anyone who wants to know more about the true history behind the Scottish locations of Outlander season 2. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an insight into some of Scotland’s most intriguing and romantic historical buildings.

I traveled to Scotland in 1999 before seeing the Outlander series. Having had a visit to Culloden, and knowing little about it, I would have benefited so much if I had seen Dr. Montgomery's talk first. Thank You!
I have taken multiple seminars led by Dr. Montgomery and will continue. His seminars are clear, informative, often enlightening and always enjoyable.
This was so interesting and Dr. Montgomery's knowledge so important! I learned so much!
