Lecture Description
London and the British monarchy have been closely linked for centuries. Over the years, the royal rulers of England and more recently Britain, have built themselves sumptuous palaces in the city, several of which still survive and are open to visitors. In this lecture, we will take a look at six of the most historic, must-see Royal palaces found in central London.
Meet Your Expert
Alan

Alan was born and raised in Scotland but has spent most of his adult life in London. Having achieved an MA in Art History at Glasgow University, he worked for many years in the art world at both an international auction house and an antique dealer. He then returned to academia, achieving an MA in Classical Civilisation in 2011, and later completed a Ph.D. in which he analyzed eighteenth-century attitudes towards the ancient Roman world. Elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 2017, he published his first book 'Classical Caledonia' in 2020. His latest book, 'Walking the Antonine Wall', recounts his journey on foot along a Roman frontier in Scotland.

Taking a chronological approach, we will begin with the Palace of Westminster, established almost 1000 years ago and a seat of royal power until the 1500s, and finish at the iconic Buckingham Palace, the official residence of King Charles III. In between, we will discuss two of the most famous royal residences, the Tower of London and Kensington Palace, as well as lesser-known palaces at Whitehall and Kew. Each of these beautiful historic buildings has a unique story to tell, tales of wealth and power, love and betrayal, ambition and conflict. Led by a historian, writer and Context guide, Alan Montgomery, this lecture will explore the history and architecture of London’s palaces. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better understanding of these fascinating royal residences and the people who built and lived in them.
