Lecture Description

Cross the river to the winding streets of one of Rome's oldest and most charming neighborhoods. Trastevere, literally 'across the Tiber,' is Rome's original working class district and home to the most ethnically and religiously diverse community in the Ancient world. As the Capital's population grew in the first century BCE, its ports along the river flanking this district became the heart of a maritime economy that brought both goods and migrants from all over the Mediterranean into Rome. Trastevere offers a glimpse of this melting pot of 'otherness' even today. Highlights include the early-Christian church S. Maria in Trastevere, traces of Rome's mercantile Jewish community and tiny medieval houses that have become some of Rome's most desirable contemporary real estate.

Meet Your Expert

Andrew

Andrew, a New York City native, is a LEED-accredited architect who came to Rome as a Fellow of the American Academy. He holds a Masters in Architecture from Columbia University and a B.A. from Duke University. Here in Rome, he currently teaches architecture and researches ecology and urbanism in support of sustainable design projects such as his "Green Piazza" proposal for Rome. He has a varied background in design and historic preservation, which includes masonry conservation of landmark buildings in New York City as well as retail design for Whole Foods Market. Earlier in his career, he has even worked as a theater director and as a design manager for Japanese dance troupes touring in North America and Europe.

Ascending the Janiculum Hill we find Bramante's early Renaissance masterpiece the Tempietto, and the spectacular Acqua Paola, a monumental baroque fountain built by the Borghese pope to celebrate the reconstruction of Trajan's Aqueduct. Narrow roads are packed with restaurants and bars beloved to the Trasteverini and tourists alike, while the former river port which hosts Rome's huge Sunday Flea Market. Trastevere, as Rome's earliest immigrant quarter, remains even today in many ways a world apart.
