Introduction to Copenhagen Tour with Nyhavn

Discover Copenhagen’s royal streets and picturesque harbor with a local expert

The Finer Details
Explore Copenhagen on our 3-hour introductory city and canal tour with a local expert. We’ll talk about the Danish royal family and the history of the monarchy, Danish culture, and society—including its contemporary culture and traditions—and Copenhagen’s evolution from a fishing village to the capital of the Danish Empire. Our route will take us through the city center as we soak up various sites important to the city’s colorful past. These sites may include the exterior of palaces and castles (Christiansborg Palace, Amalienborg, or Rosenborg Castle), the Round Tower, and Nyhavn Harbour. This is a fitting tour for first-time visitors who want to delve deep into the history of Copenhagen and get their bearings in this lovely city.

Introduction to Copenhagen City Tour

We’ll meet near Rosenborg Castle, where we will begin our tour with an introduction to the history of the Danish royal family. We’ll explore the exterior of this castle briefly before taking some time to walk through the King’s Gardens. In this picturesque area, we’ll discuss the strategic and symbolic importance of this historic district and the role of the monarchy. Expanding our geographical scope, we will venture across the city to other notable sites, such as the Round Tower (the oldest functioning observatory in Europe), before heading to Slotsholmen—a small but very powerful island in the center of the city. Home to Christiansborg Palace, which also houses the Danish Parliament, this area is a great starting point to get a sense of Danish history as well as the country’s politics and culture today. We’ll talk about the architecture as we soak up the impressive stables and royal buildings surrounding us. Our route may take us to other lesser-known locations in the city, according to the interests of your group and our experts. We may end our route together at Nyhavn, the 17th-century harbor that is considered one of the main reasons Copenhagen has evolved into a significant European city.

We will finish our Copenhagen city and canal tour with a greater understanding of the stylish Danish capital. We’ll have crossed the city, immersing ourselves in royal history, Danish architecture, and local customs and traditions with our expert guide. We’ll leave one another with a more contextualized approach to Copenhagen.

Erik was a fantastic guide - friendly, knowledgeable, and shared a good combination of historical and personal insights. It was also apparent he had done some additional research ahead of time into our particular areas of interest, which we really appreciated!

We have very much enjoyed Context tours in Barcelona, Prague, Vienna, and now we can add Copenhagen to the list! We always book our Context tours in the first day or two of arriving so that we can learn about the history of a place, but also so that we can get our geographical bearings. In this case, Agnethe was the perfect guide for her understanding of the city both historically, and in its culture. We discussed the Kings and Queens, the fires, the wars and the rebuilding, the neighborhoods, the points of interest (to see and to avoid), the shopping, the eating, and of course the bakeries - exactly the mix that we look for. Agnethe was energetic, bright and lively, thoughtful in her commentary and responses to our questions, and very enjoyable to spend time time with. We highly recommend Agenthe in this case, and Context overall. Thank you.

We really enjoyed our introduction to Copenhagen tour with Charlotte. She was a wealth of knowledge and shared lots of historical information, but also great insights into Danish life and culture now. She was very professional but also a delightful person to chat and stroll around Copenhagen with. We also asked for some restaurant suggestions as we hadn't prepared beforehand and both were excellent!
