FAQ

William Underhill is a writer by profession and a historian by inclination. Since leaving Oxford University, he has worked as a print and radio journalist in Britain and overseas. For more than 20 years he was employed as a correspondent in London for Newsweek magazine, writing on subjects from Afghanistan to the arts. He has also written a guide to the Thames waterfront in London. Six years ago he returned to Oxford and – together with his wife, Isabella - is a member of the Oxford Guild of Guides. He still contributes occasionally to The New York Times and Architect magazine on architecture and design, and works part-time as an editor for The Week.

Imogen Rumbold is a retired solicitor living in London. She is the mother of 3 children, now grown up, but not so long ago that she cannot remember what it is like to be in children’s company! Originally called to the Bar in 1979, she then swapped sides to become a solicitor and partner in the law firm of Lawrence Graham (now Gowlings WLG), and thereafter as a partner in the niche City shipping practice of Lax & Co. Practising as a shipping litigator led to quite a lot of travel, to such places as Russia, Bulgaria and land-locked Switzerland. In 2018, Imogen retired to devote herself to guiding, thus indulging her interests in history without quite abandoning the law. She is a fully qualified tourist guide and holds the coveted Blue Badge, which permits her to lead tours in London, the Cotswolds, Bath and Stonehenge, amongst other sites. She loves sharing London with visitors, the capital city where she has lived and worked for over 40 years. She gets just as much pleasure from guiding children as she does from guiding grown-ups. Come and visit!

Emma was born and brought up in London. She studied history and law at Cambridge University then became a Barrister at the Inner Temple. She joined the Government Legal Service with responsibility for human rights cases and later worked in the Court of Criminal Appeal. She left legal practice to bring up children George and Claudia and returned to work in 2007 founding a small art tours club. She took a degree in History of Art at Birkbeck College, London University specialising in British Art of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. She became a Blue Badge Guide to London in 2016 after studying for 2 years and taking lots of exams. She has decided not to do any more for the time being. While she has intimate knowledge of the major tourist sites, she also knows the hidden away nooks and crannies of London with its endless fascinating treasures for all “studious and curious” travelers.
