Tour Description
Spend a day exploring Marrakech from its imperial past to its artisan traditions. With an experienced local guide you’ll explore the city’s defining monuments before stepping into a traditional workshop, where a skilled maalem, artisan mosaicist, will show you how to create a Moroccan mosaic for yourself. History in the morning, craft in the afternoon.
A city the color of clay, set against the Atlas Mountains, opens its story in layers. Founded in 1070 as the capital of the Almoravid Empire, Marrakech still carries the confidence of an imperial city, even as it hums with modern life. What does it mean for a place to be both a gateway to the Sahara, and a guardian of tradition?

Stand before the Koutoubia Mosque, its minaret rising above terracotta walls, and consider how faith shaped the skyline. Within the carved stucco and cedar of Medersa Ben Youssef, geometry becomes a language of devotion and intellect. At Bahia Palace and the vast grounds of Badi Palace, power reveals itself through craftsmanship, gardens, and silence. Nearby, the Saadian Tombs echo with dynastic memory, their decoration speaking softly of eternity.

Your guide, who has lived these rhythms firsthand, offers context and clarity, helping you navigate both history and daily life. There is space to ask questions freely, to explore nuances, and to feel grounded in a city that can otherwise overwhelm.

In the afternoon, step into El Fekharin, where clay and patience shape another chapter of Marrakech’s identity. Over mint tea, a skilled artisan introduces zellige, the intricate mosaic tradition born in the ninth century and refined over generations. You’ll learn how natural clay is shaped, fired, glazed, and hand cut into small geometric pieces before being assembled into harmonious patterns.

Then, settle into your own work. Under careful guidance, practice cutting and arranging tesserae, gradually forming a design that reflects centuries of mathematical precision and cultural symbolism. How often do we pause long enough to understand the labor behind beauty? By day’s end, carry not only a deeper understanding of Marrakech’s architectural and artistic legacy, but a tile you crafted with your own hands.

If preferred, the mosaic workshop can be replaced with a pottery workshop or a tagine cooking class. Simply let us know at checkout.
