Introduction to Modica Tour with Chocolate Tasting

Explore the remarkable architecture and indulge in a traditional chocolate tasting

The Finer Details
Step into the enchanting streets of Modica, between stunning Baroque architecture and timeless chocolate-making traditions that go back to the time of the Aztecs. Guided by a local architecture or history expert, this immersive tour takes you on a journey into Modica's rich history and culinary treasures.

Route Details

At the beginning of the tour, your expert guide will introduce you to the town’s unique layout, divided into Modica Bassa (lower) and Modica Alta (upper), each dominated by a stunning cathedral. In Modica Alta, you will visit the imposing Cathedral of San Giorgio, renowned for its intricate baroque façade, while in Modica Bassa, you will enter San Pietro, famous for the magnificent Madonna of Trapani.

You will continue with the extraordinary gem of San Nicolò Inferiore, a rock-hewn church discovered by accident in 1987, and characterized by its incredible Byzantine frescoes and hidden behind the unassuming facade of a garage.

At the end of your visit, you will stop at a local chocolate atelier, where you’ll learn all the secrets of Modica’s iconic chocolate, which you will be able to taste yourself and bring home with you. Modica’s chocolate process was inspired by the ancient Aztec process, brought to Sicily by the Spaniards, and still followed today.

Your local expert will guide you through the intricate tapestry of Modica’s past, blending art, architecture, and culinary heritage into an unforgettable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour suitable for families with children? Yes, while this tour is not specifically designed for families, it is suitable for families with children. Just keep in mind that it can get quite hot in Modica in the summer, so we recommend coming prepared for the weather. There are a lot of steps to climb to visit the churches, so we do not advise using strollers on this tour.

Accessibility

We understand that some of our valued guests may have mobility concerns, and we want to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience throughout your tour. If there are any accessibility concerns that your tour guide will need to be aware of, please let our team know at the time of booking.

Is this tour wheelchair-friendly? It depends on the time of year and the severity of the mobility issue. Modica is built in a valley and extends upwards on two sides, so the streets are steep and narrow. There are also a lot of steps to get into both churches. During the high season, the city of Modica runs a tourist train through town that can be used for families with children or persons with reduced mobility. It is an hour long and wouldn’t be available for the whole tour or all year. Modica is a complex city to visit for anyone in a wheelchair.

Sabrina was fantastic! She’s knowledgeable about history, culture, architecture, food - anything and everything you want to know - puts it all in historical/political/cultural context, is friendly and personable, and able to tailor the tour to our preferences. We’ve been on a number of different types of Context tours in different countries, and this was one of the best we’ve done.
