Introduction to Noto Tour

A unique Baroque gem built from earthquake ruins to UNESCO glory

The Finer Details
Noto is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its harmonious streets and golden limestone buildings. It is called “The Capital of Baroque”, and was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693. The city’s architecture today still reflects the careful blend of artistry and planning designed during the Baroque by architects like Rosario Gagliardi, Vincenzo Sinatra, and Paolo Labisi. As the sunlight fades, the local stone glows with a warm, pinkish hue, giving the entire city a soft, magical atmosphere.

Route Details

The tour begins at Porta Reale, the grand triumphal arch built in the 19th century to honor the royal visit of Ferdinand II to Noto. From there, your guide, a local architecture or history expert, will lead you through the city’s main squares and show the most iconic landmarks along Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

At the Church of Santa Chiara, you can climb from the bell tower to a terrace with stunning views of Noto and its surroundings. You will then visit the spectacular baroque Duomo or Cathedral of San Nicolò, and view the facade of Palazzo Nicolaci, which showcases all the creativity of the Baroque style, with the carved cherubs, winged horses, and mythical figures that adorn its facade.

Your guide will describe how the city was rebuilt after the earthquake with the intention of creating the "perfect city" with a focus on both beauty and functionality. This tour takes a closer look at the traditions, history, and craftsmanship that have made Noto a symbol of perseverance and artistic achievement.
