Shigenori Murata
Shigenori Murata is a Tokyo-born guide with a special interest in Japanese philosophy, Zen, religion, aesthetics, and food culture. He holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford, where he focused on Japanese philosophy, especially Nishida Kitaro’s idea of absolute nothingness.
Having spent formative years in Yokohama and Kamakura, and having been educated at a school connected to the Zen tradition, Shigenori has long had both a personal and academic interest in Japanese spirituality, silence, and the aesthetic values that shape everyday life in Japan.
He enjoys helping travelers discover Japan in a way that feels thoughtful, personal, and grounded in real experience. He is especially interested in how Japanese food expresses seasonality, care, and local character, and he enjoys sharing the cultural stories behind markets, dishes, and everyday food traditions.
Shigenori also teaches meditation, and he is particularly drawn to places that connect beauty, stillness, and cultural meaning. Whether walking through temples and shrines, gardens, markets, or lively Tokyo neighborhoods, he hopes to help guests experience Japan in a way that feels warm, engaging, and meaningful.
