Meet Your Expert
Alette

Alette has an MA in Art History (Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) and holds a Ph.D. in the History of Science and Technology (University of Twente, Enschede). For both her thesis and her dissertation, she researched the intricate relationship between nature, art and science in the 20th century (thesis) and the 17th century (dissertation). Sculpture parks, ornamental gardens, and botanical gardens form the sites of study. As an independent scholar, she presents papers and writes articles on this subject. Alette also teaches art history and lectures on topics such as 17th-century Dutch art and architecture, 18th century Empire design, garden architecture, and landscape engineering. She has curated several exhibitions and stood at the basis of the exhibition Black is Beautiful on the image of black people in Dutch art history. She lives in the city where she was born: Amsterdam.

For such an enigmatic painter with a very small oeuvre, the painter from Delft has attracted loads of attention, from scholars and art lovers alike. Over the last 150 years, there has been a wealth of documentaries, lectures, novels, and movies that all attempt to shed light on the master and his work. Through this lecture, art historian and expert Alette will step into Vermeer’s time and take the viewers through Vermeer’s works. We’ll learn about the historical context of his time, discuss the meaning of various details in his paintings, and explore his studio practices.

Led by an expert on art history, Alette Fleischer, this lecture will focus on Vermeer, his world, and his work. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge about Vermeer and a desire to examine their favorite Vermeer works.

Simply outstanding.
It was excellent . There were some guesses as to Vermeer's working methods. But costs for pigments, bankruptcy information as to clues, and religious impositions in Delft during his time all seems to factor in to some of his working conditions. The work itself is astounding. I have lucky enough to see three or four in my lifetime.
Really interesting talk on the techniques Vermeer employed, and another sensitive discussion of some of his paintings. Highly recommended.
