Tour Description
Tucked into a valley just northwest of Florence lies the untouched Carmignano region. Frequented by the Medici family since Renaissance times, the area is known for its wine production and its untouched beauty. During this half-day Carmignano tour led by a local expert, you will have the opportunity to experience the fruits of the region—most notably, its wine, olive oil, and cheese production—as well as revel in its striking natural beauty.

After a quick drive from your Florence hotel, you will arrive in Carmignano, regarded as the "hidden jewel of Tuscany". You will begin with a visit exploring the charming city center. If open, you may stroll by the San Michele and San Francesco church which houses one of Pontormo's greatest works, Visitation. You may then take a stroll up to the medieval fortress, La Rocca di Carmignano, where you can enjoy the splendor of the Tuscan countryside and take in the amazing views of the rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves.

You will then head to a private estate, located in the heart of the surrounding countryside, surveying the grounds where the local wine grapes are grown and the ancient cellars where the wine is stored. After a guided tour of the ancient cellars and gardens, you will taste several wines of small production, along with extra virgin olive oil, Tuscan cheeses, and cold cuts. You will have the possibility to try Tuscany's historical dessert wine, the Vin Santo. If you are lucky enough to visit during the season (around November), you may also get to witness the process of olive oil production and visit the estate's frantoio, the traditional press used for making olive oil.

This sensorial excursion into a corner of Tuscany rarely frequented will give us an undiluted experience with its landscape, people and products. At the conclusion of the tour, our expert will accompany us back to your hotel or flat in Florence.

Please note: As of 2024, the San Michele and San Francesco church is currently closed for renovation and Pontormo's Visitation is not visible. However, a reproduction of the painting can still be viewed in the cloister.

The private winery estate visited on this tour is open to the public which means there maybe be other people present on your cellar tour since its run by the estate. However, your guide will be present with you throughout the tour adding their own insights and expertise.

Logistic note: This tour includes a car service that will pick you up at your accommodation. Please tell us your hotel or apartment address in the 'additional details' box when adding the tour to your shopping cart. The price of this excursion includes round-trip car transportation and wine tastings at the estate.

Adrienne was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Wine tasting could have included a bit of food - cheese? - not just a few pieces of bread. Most of the tour was spent in the cellars and no time was spent in the vineyards or anywhere with an over-view of them. I know it was not harvest time, but we did not see any processing place either - for wine or olive oil.
Very enjoyable.
