Our time together will begin near the Jewish Ghetto, where we can sample some of Rome's legendary fried snacks, and possibly carciofi (artichokes). Though the route of our tour will vary depending on the season and our interests, we will hit several different local shops that illustrate the rich food culture of Rome. Whether it be pizza, coffee, gelato, or biscotti, all of our samplings will teach us a bit more about the tapestry of foodstuffs that are integral to the cultural attitudes and history of the city. Our tour will most certainly include an experience with a coffee (or cappuccino) at a local coffee bar, where we’ll learn about the history of coffee culture and the fierce rivalries that exist today between different coffee shops.
Of course, our tour will not be complete without a slice of pizza. We’ll taste thin-crusted Roman-style pizza and discuss characteristic varieties, especially the renowned pizza bianca. Finally, we’ll wrap up our tour at a family-run, artisanal gelateria, where the gelato is made by hand using the freshest ingredients sourced from all over Italy. By the end of our walk, we’ll come away with an appreciation for and understanding of the rich culinary tradition that still exists in the center of Rome. Using the lessons learned with our gastronomic expert, we’ll comfortably be able to navigate Rome's cafes and food shops like a native.

Overall, yes. All sites are accessible although the length of itinerary and terrain might pose difficulties to slow walkers or wheelchair users. Please note, the shops we visit do not have wheelchair-accessible toilets.
Simona is a native Roman who completed her degree in archaeology at the Sapienza University of Rome. She obtained her PhD in 2005 with a focus on the study of the topography of ancient Mesopotamian towns. She first arrived in Berlin in 2003 while writing her dissertation, and since then has divided her life between Rome and Berlin. Her interests vary between research activities (excavations, international congresses, and scientific publications) and teaching. In her university years she created a cultural association with some colleagues where she led tours in Rome and abroad, gaining a deep knowledge of archaeology in countries such as Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, and Libya. In 2009 she became a Fellow of the Freie Universitaet in Berlin working on a project focused on the landscape in the Jazirah area (northern Syria) and started to collaborate with the German archaeological team working in Tell Fecheriye. She also developed a great interest for wine studies and in 2003 she earned a diploma as Wine Taster at the AIS (Associazione Italiana Sommelier). Subsequently she organized and led tours with the AIS in Sicily and Piedmont and worked as a wine taster for their wine guidebook. She is currently pursuing a Diploma in Wine and Spirits at the University of Geisenheim (WSET 4).
Jacopo graduated from La Sapienza University in Rome with a degree in Medieval History. After his studies, he started working for a publishing company. He has always had a passion for camping trips (starting at a young age when his father bought a motorhome) and he converted his love of the outdoors and an interest in food into a cookbook for camping stoves. From here, his career as a food writer was born. Jacopo is currently completing his professional sommelier accreditation.
Francesca has an MA in Archaeology with a specialization in Neolithic Age. As a student, she has joined archaeological campaigns in Bronze Age and Neolithic sites in central and southern Italy, and in the Forum of Trajan of Rome, in the Imperial Fora. Before becoming a licensed tour guide of Rome in 2009, she has been working on exchange programs for students on behalf of an international organization based in the US. She has been an exchange student in Finland when she was 17. She is also a certified AIS (Associazione Italiana Sommelier) sommelier and has a deep passion for wine: she still participates in tasting classes and seminars to be always updated on new trends, soils, territories, and stories of winemakers. She loves giving wine and food tours, as in this way she is able to convey and share her huge interest in Italian culture, its habits, food, and way of living.
