The Finer Details
Some places seem to offer their story all at once, until you realize how much remains unspoken. Rising above the Tuscan countryside, San Gimignano’s towers catch the eye immediately, but they also are a symbol of the rivalry and ambition of its inhabitants. Each tower once signaled a family’s influence, part status symbol, part statement etched into the skyline.

As you move through its streets, those signals begin to take shape. Trade routes like the Via Francigena brought wealth, pilgrims, and ideas, turning this hill town into a crossroads of movement and exchange. Saffron and Vernaccia were not just local products, they were part of a wider network that connected this place far beyond its walls.

The road between towns becomes its own kind of pause. Vineyards stretch across the hills, olive trees shift with the light, and the pace slows without effort. With no need to navigate or plan, attention moves outward, toward the land, the conversation, and the shared experience of seeing it all unfold together.

Volterra does not reveal itself in quite the same way. Its presence is quieter, held behind walls that have stood for centuries, and beneath them, something even older. Before medieval stone defined its streets, this was Veláthri, a powerful Etruscan city whose legacy still shapes the town’s edges and entryways.

At its ancient gate, massive volcanic stones form an arch that has endured since the 4th century BC. It is more than an entrance, it is a threshold between eras, where one civilization gave way to another, yet never fully disappeared. Inside, workshops and quiet streets continue that story in another form. Volterra’s alabaster, carved into delicate objects, reflects both craft and continuity, a tradition passed through generations.

By the end of the day, what stays with you is not just what you’ve seen, but the sense that these places are still holding something, waiting to be understood a little more deeply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely! We welcome families and travelers of all ages. However, please note that the itinerary is quite comprehensive and involves a significant amount of walking over the course of a full day. We recommend ensuring that younger children are comfortable with a more active pace.

They are not included. But If you wish to enter, please let your guide know and they will help you purchase tickets on site.

We are happy to consider alternative pickup locations on a case-by-case basis. If your accommodation is outside central Siena, please provide the details at checkout. We will contact you to discuss the logistics and any potential additional transportation fees that may apply.
Yes, we can certainly arrange a meeting point in Volterra. Please specify this preference during checkout. Please be aware that because our guides travel from Siena, the private car service remains reserved for their transit; therefore, meeting in Volterra does not result in a price reduction. Additionally, the start time in Volterra may be slightly later than the standard Florence departure.
Certainly. If you wish to remain in San Gimignano at the end of the day, please let us know at checkout so we can coordinate accordingly. Since our guides are based in Siena, the car service is still required for their return journey. Choosing this option may result in the tour concluding slightly earlier than scheduled, as it will not include the final drive back to the city.
Our itinerary is carefully curated to provide the most seamless and high-quality experience possible. For this reason, we strongly recommend sticking to the standard route. Should you wish to visit a different town, this would require a fully customized itinerary designed by our dedicated planning team and will involve a separate quoting process.
Volterra and San Gimignano historic centers are located on a hilltop, so this tour involves some uphill sections, during which the guide will stop to provide explanations outside and inside some of the churches. The terrain may be difficult to those with mobility concerns due to cobblestones, and it is not wheelchair friendly.

Don’t just take our word for it
