Route Details

This 2-hour walking tour starts right in the heart of it all: Piazza San Marco. Here, you’ll pause outside St. Mark’s Basilica and hear stories about its incredible architecture, why its domes and pinnacles resemble a mosque more than a typical church, and why that difference matters. Venice was a republic built on trade in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It was the gateway between East and West: from the Middle East to India, China, and beyond. The city was designed to reflect and welcome those influences, so only in Venice does a church like St. Mark’s make perfect sense.

From there, the route winds through the narrow streets toward the Rialto Bridge, once the city’s bustling commercial hub, where merchants offered the best of both worlds, from Eastern spices to Western goods.
