Route Details

This 2-hour walking tour starts right in the heart of it all: Piazza San Marco. Here, you’ll pause outside St. Mark’s Basilica and hear stories about its incredible architecture, why its domes and pinnacles resemble a mosque more than a typical church, and why that difference matters. Venice was a republic built on trade in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It was the gateway between East and West: from the Middle East to India, China, and beyond. The city was designed to reflect and welcome those influences, so only in Venice does a church like St. Mark’s make perfect sense.

From there, the route winds through the narrow streets toward the Rialto Bridge, once the city’s bustling commercial hub, where merchants offered the best of both worlds, from Eastern spices to Western goods. You’ll pass through the neighborhood as you hear stories on how trade, tides, and clever logistics shaped Venice’s rhythm and wealth. Chiara absolutely made all the difference in getting us oriented to the beautifully complex city of Venice! I am so pleased we were able to meet with her right when we arrived. I'm absolutely certain we will now get the most out of our 5 days here. But more than that, she truly cared about us. When she learned we were just arriving, she suggested she come meet us rather than us hustle to get to her. She made sure we knew how to get around the city by every conveyance, and she took pictures of us in all the most iconic place? Even though there were thousands of people vying for the same shots! My husband also has a particular interest in architecture...Chiara taught us so much about the uniqueness of Venetian architecture, I wished I'd written it all down! She's an expert in her field and has a true love for this city. We highly recommend her!
