Route Details

Your journey begins at the Lower Belvedere, constructed between 1714 and 1716, the former private residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy. Here, you’ll catch a glimpse into the private life of the man who helped shape European politics and military history.

Wander through the impressive Grand Hall to see the breathtaking Martino Altomonte ceiling fresco and the richly decorated Grotesque Room. As you explore, your expert guide will show you how the Belvedere was envisioned as a Gesamtkunstwek, or total work of art, where architecture, painting, and sculpture come together to tell one unified story.

Then, begin your ascent to the Upper Belvedere, a symbolic and literal ascent that mirrors a journey from private to public life. Along the way, your expert guide will delve into how the architectural details of the palace were designed to impress and communicate power.

Head to the Österreichische Galerie, home to some of the world’s most iconic works of art. Here, you’ll stand before Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss as your expert unpacks the technique behind its creation and the rich symbolism found in every detail. Dive into its significance, reflecting on Austria’s post-WWII recovery and the movements it inspired.

Learn how the Belvedere played a significant role during and after WWII and how its central location made it a key landmark during and after the war. It was here, after all, that the Austrian State Treaty was signed on site in 1955, marking the restoration of Austria's independence.

By the end of your visit, you will have gained immense insight into more than just the venue’s famous art collection; you will have walked through Vienna’s history. Through the lens of political power, artistic innovation, and cultural rebirth, the Belvedere offers an important look into the histories and stories that have defined Vienna and continue to do so in the present day.

We had an excellent tour of the Belvedere with Piroska. Piroska is a passionate communicator and a knowledgeable guide, who put what we were seeing in historical context, which we loved. We would highly recommend a tour with Piroska.

Alexa was a wonderful and informative tour guide! I really enjoyed my time with her throughout the day as she took me through both palaces. Alexa is extremely knowledgeable in both history and art which allowed me to appreciate all of the various aspects of the two palaces that we visited today. Alexa also has a lovely disposition and a great sense of humour. I would recommend Alexa as a guide to anyone! Thank you again, Alexa and thank you, Context Travel! Jenifer M, Toronto, Canada
