Don’t just take our word for it
My husband and I so enjoyed our half day tour with Betül! This tour was the perfect way to orient ourselves to Turkish cuisine, and also learn how Turkish people live and eat in Istanbul. Betül was a great host, and her background is so interesting! She shared some of her experiences working with an archeologist with us, and we enjoyed speaking with her about her travels to the US as well. Thanks to this tour we tried foods we likely wouldn’t have tried ourselves, including an intestine sandwich that was actually my favorite bite of the day. Betül also gave us some restaurant recommendations for the rest of our time in Istanbul, and those didn’t disappoint either! Highly recommend this tour for foodies or anyone who wants to learn more about Turkish culture. Thank you for everything Betül!
Had difficulty meeting up with guide. The Spice Bazaar has several entrances and though we provided our cab driver your description of the meeting point, we found out we were dropped off at the wrong place. Usually your tours have a photo of the meeting point--this one did not. Suggest that one be included in the future.

About This Istanbul Food Tour
This private Istanbul food tour explores the city through two of its most distinctive culinary districts: the historic Spice Bazaar in Eminönü and Kadıköy Market on Istanbul’s Asian side. Over three hours, travelers taste Turkish specialties, learn how ingredients and food traditions reflect the city’s history, and cross the Bosphorus by ferry between Europe and Asia. Led by a local culinary expert, the tour goes beyond sampling individual dishes. Conversations may touch on regional ingredients, Ottoman influences, contemporary Turkish food culture, market traditions, and the ways Istanbul’s position between continents has shaped what the city eats today. Tastings vary with season and availability but may include Turkish delight, cheeses, cured or preserved foods, pickles, dried fruits and nuts, Turkish coffee, spices, sweets, and other local specialties. Together, the tastings are designed to replace a meal.
This tour is well suited to travelers who want to understand Istanbul through everyday food culture rather than simply visit its major landmarks. It is particularly useful for first-time visitors who may find Istanbul’s markets difficult to navigate independently and want a local expert to help explain unfamiliar ingredients, vendors, dishes, and customs.
Because this is a private tour, the conversation can respond to your interests, whether you are curious about Turkish cuisine, neighborhood life, food history, local markets, or what and where to eat during the rest of your stay.
Spice Bazaar
The tour begins at Istanbul’s historic Spice Bazaar in Eminönü. Among stalls selling spices, dried fruits, nuts, sweets, teas, and other ingredients, your expert introduces the flavors and products that appear across Turkish cooking while explaining the market’s place within Istanbul’s long history of commerce.
Bosphorus Ferry
From the European side of Istanbul, you cross the Bosphorus by public ferry to Kadıköy. The journey is part of the experience: it connects two distinct sides of the city while offering a glimpse of the waterways that have shaped Istanbul’s trade, movement, and daily life for centuries.
Kadıköy Market
On Istanbul’s Asian side, Kadıköy offers a more neighborhood-focused food experience. Its market streets include fishmongers, bakeries, delicatessens, produce vendors, pickle shops, sweet shops, and other specialists used by local residents. Your expert helps decode what you are seeing and introduces foods you might otherwise overlook.
Istanbul’s cuisine cannot be reduced to a single dish or culinary tradition. The city has been shaped by centuries of migration, imperial history, regional trade, and its position between Europe and Asia. A food tour provides a practical way to understand those influences through ingredients, recipes, markets, and the people who sell and prepare them.
Exploring with an expert also makes Istanbul’s large food markets easier to navigate. Rather than simply browsing stalls, you can understand what unfamiliar ingredients are, how they are used, which foods are associated with particular regions or traditions, and what to look for elsewhere in the city.
Is this a private Istanbul food tour?
Yes. This experience is offered as a private tour, allowing your expert to adapt the discussion and pacing to your interests and your party.
What food will I try on the tour?
Tastings change according to season and availability. Previous tastings have included Turkish delight, dried fruits and nuts, cheeses, cured meats, preserved fish, pickled foods, seasonal fruit, spices, and Turkish coffee.
Does the Istanbul food tour include enough food for a meal?
Yes. The combined tastings are intended to replace a meal.
Does the tour visit both the European and Asian sides of Istanbul?
Yes. The tour begins at the Spice Bazaar on Istanbul’s European side before crossing the Bosphorus by ferry to Kadıköy Market on the Asian side.
Can the tour accommodate dietary restrictions?
Many dietary restrictions can be accommodated when shared in advance. Travelers should provide dietary requirements when booking so the expert can adapt the tastings where possible.
Where does the tour start and end?
The tour begins near the Spice Bazaar in Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula and finishes in Kadıköy. Your expert can help explain how to return to the European side or continue to your next destination.
