London in a Day? It might seem like a crazy idea, but we’ve carefully crafted an itinerary that allows for an 8-hour dive into this champion of a city. In the company of a local expert, we'll spend our time unpacking one of the most visited cities on the globe. From Westminster Abbey to Big Ben to Trafalgar Square and the Tower of London, this tour is a fantastic introduction to the vibrant British capital.
London in a Day
Includes a short briefing in a cafe and sites such as the Tower of London, the Thames, Borough Market, St James Park, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. Local lunch (at own expense).
The Tower of London and the Crown Jewels
Our walk begins in a small cafe beside the Tower of London, bright and early. We’ll start with a coffee and a short briefing on London and the surrounding area (with relevant maps and tips) before we kick things off at one of London’s most renowned sites, The Tower of London. We’ll spend around two hours here, discussing grizzly beheadings to political unrest and the Crown Jewels. We’ll use the Tower as a backdrop for understanding and discussing British history, the political intrigues of kings and queens and the daily life of commoners. This is a glimpse into our Tower of London Tour
From the Thames to Borough Market
We’ll make our way west, walking alongside the Thames, soaking up the myriad of architectural splendor that London offers in this area. From City Hall to London Bridge to the Shard to the Gherkin there’s plenty to see. At this point, we will stop for a spot of lunch at Borough Market (at own expense). Our expert guide will talk about local British produce as we feast our eyes, minds and bellies on anything that we might have our eye on. Re-energized, we’ll continue to soak up London sites as we cross the Millennium Bridge and see the vibrant city from an alternative perspective: above the Thames. We’ll note Shakespeare’s Globe and the Tate Modern Gallery, allowing for a delve into the literary and artistic energy running through London’s wires. We’ll stop in the City of London at St. Paul’s Cathedral. We’ll see the exterior of one of Sir Christopher Wren’s architectural feats as we discuss anything from city planning to the impact of World War Two and the Blitz on London.
Westminster Abbey and Royal Parks
At this point, we might hop on the tube or grab a taxi to Westminster Abbey. While London is laden with well-known, memorable landmarks, few represent English history and culture better than Westminster Abbey. We’ll tap into nearly 1,000 years of British history with a visit to this impressive emblem of British Christianity. This is a snapshot into our Westminster Abbey Tour
. We’ll walk through St James’s Park and pass by the Queen’s residence (Buckingham Palace) to catch site of some of the guards in their uniform. We will finish in this area, near the Mall and Trafalgar Square.
At the end of our immersive full-day itinerary, we will emerge with a deeper understanding of what makes this British capital tick. We’ll have ventured across the city to sites relevant to London's historic, cultural and monarchical identity. Hopefully, our ‘London in a Day, with Context’ will leave us with a better knowledge of anything from Henry VIII to Scotch eggs to the Tube.
