Amsterdam History Tour: The Dutch Golden Age

Follow the money and ambitions behind the canal belt

The Finer Details
As you wander along the streets of Amsterdam, it is impossible to escape the influence of seafaring trade and the influence it has had on the city. The endless charm of the canals, which brings visitors to the city today, is a direct result of the trade history of the city.

When you meet your expert guide at the West India House, they will immediately transport you to the 1600s in Amsterdam, when the building was the headquarters of the Dutch West India Company. They will paint the picture of the circumstances around some of the most important decisions made in the building, from various trade endeavors to the idea to start a small colony on an island called Manhattan.

As you move away from the economic center, your guide will weave stories together about the domestic and social lives of the upper classes in the Jordaan neighborhood, home to some of the more beautiful and well-preserved canal houses.

You will eventually find yourself in the middle of the canal belt, the perfect backdrop to consider how the development of the canal system has radically determined the city of Amsterdam has become. As you end your time with your expert guide, you will have a deep understanding of how the Dutch Golden Age set the stage for the city that is Amsterdam today.

Henrik was an amazing guide. Super personable and we learned so much about the history of Amsterdam as well currently day issues. I HIGHLY recommend this tour!!

Lora was an absolutely fantastic tour guide. I was travelling solo and Lora made a point to ensure our time together focused on my interests. We saw so many interesting sights that were only made interesting by the facts and insights Lora shared. I especially loved when we walked down streets that looked generally average, but then Lora pointed out architectural features or other facts that turned "average" into "fascinating". Lora was engaging and friendly, highly knowledgeable, and made me feel comfortable as a total stranger to Amsterdam. Near the very end of our tour, heavy rains and a thunderstorm quickly rolled in. Even then, Lora found a way to make it interesting. She first guided us to cover. We talked a bit more while the rains moved through. Once the rains let up a bit, she took me to a good spot where she could ensure an Uber would find me. She then also waited to ensure the Uber picked me up safely. I could not be more thankful for Lora's attention to my safety as well as all the wonderful facts and sights she shared. I would 100% recommend Lora as a guide to anyone visiting Amsterdam!

Great tour. Thank you
