Your full-day exploration begins when you meet your expert and share a bit about yourself and your interest in order to inform the narrative for your tour. You’ll start your walk at Brandenburg Gate, one of the most iconic sites in the city: a symbol of Berlin’s Cold War division, and now, a united Germany. Continuing through Berlin’s historic center, you’ll explore the complex legacy of WWII in the city with stops at Hitler’s bunker, the Topography of Terror site, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

Your historical morning will be topped off with a delicious lunch at a local restaurant or cafe, where you’ll be able to spend time asking your expert anything—from questions about what you’ve seen to the local culture. After lunch, you’ll carry on exploring the Mitte neighborhood. Here, you’ll wander down Unter den Linden, a boulevard named after the linden trees that line it.

You will continue your tour at the Berlin Wall Memorial, one of the most important historical sites not only in Berlin, but in the world. Here, your expert will discuss the history of the wall’s construction and reflect on how its impact is still felt in the city today, decades after its fall.

At the end of this fascinating and comprehensive tour, you will come out with a deeper appreciation and understanding of Berlin’s complicated past, and how it has risen into a modern cultural and artistic center.

Aaron Birchenough with Context Travel led our family of four on a top-notch private tour of Berlin. As a professional archeologist, Aaron brought hidden layers of Berlin's history, particularly during the World War II and Cold War periods, to life. For example, he shared vivid images of the devastation of the city during the closing weeks of the war, contrasting it with the structures that were rebuilt or built anew. Aaron pointed out details such as bullet holes in walls that had been patched up during postwar reconstruction by the Americans, British, French, and Soviets, encouraging us all to look for these signs that are often overlooked by the casual observer. Aaron's perspective on the Berlin Wall was gripping and chilling, as he described how the wall was built and hardened over time, along with stories of daringly successful and tragically unsuccessful escape attempts. Aaron provided a terrific overview of Berlin's turbulent history, which greatly enhanced our family's understanding and enriched the rest of our stay in the city. I highly recommend Aaron's tour, particularly early in your visit to Berlin so that you can benefit from his perspective throughout your time there. Top marks!
