Bologna Day Trips: Ravenna Mosaics Tour from Bologna

Walking Tour

9 hrs

Bologna

English

Ravenna tells us more than anywhere else about a very unique moment in Western history, where the grandeur of the Roman Empire transitions into the spirituality and artistry of medieval Christendom. When Emperor Honorius moved the capital of the Western Roman Empire here in 402 AD, Ravenna transformed from a provincial town into an imperial residence, where architecture, art, and faith were instruments of power. Follow a lifelong local expert as mosaics, basilicas, and mausoleums reveal how politics, faith, and culture shaped a city that still pulses with history. Can a single city tell the story of empire, religion, and artistic mastery all at once? Ravenna suggests it can.

Throughout the day, the experience is shaped to your rhythm. Whether walking through the mosaic-detailed interiors of San Vitale or pausing at the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, every stop is intentional, guided, and flexible. You’ll have lunch in the city center with time for conversation, reflection, and planning the afternoon according to your interests: perhaps a deeper dive into Dante’s Ravenna, or a closer look at less-visited UNESCO sites.

Choose this tour if…

You want to better understand the transition from Roman imperial culture to Byzantine and early Christian art
You want to experience Ravenna’s mosaics with an expert who has spent a lifetime studying their meaning
You want a private, flexible day that follows your interests rather than a fixed script
You want to take home stories and insights that will stay with you long after the mosaics fade from view

Route Details

The day begins at Bologna’s train station, where you meet your guide before traveling together to Ravenna. During the journey, your guide introduces the historical context that made Ravenna a unique capital of the Western Roman Empire after 402 AD, setting the stage for the monuments you are about to encounter.

Upon arrival, the walk through Ravenna’s historic center leads into its core UNESCO sites, including the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, the Basilica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, and the Neonian Baptistery. Inside each monument, attention is given to the mosaics’ iconography, architectural choices, and the political and religious messages they were designed to convey during the 5th and 6th centuries.

A lunch break in central Ravenna offers time to pause and reflect on the morning’s discoveries. The afternoon then adapts to your interests, whether that means visiting additional UNESCO monuments, exploring Dante’s connection to the city, or returning to a site that invites a deeper look before concluding the day.

Silvia was one of the best guides I have ever been with. She added the Contemporary Art Museum and her knowledge of the artists were as great as the mosaics. She took a great interest in my interests. What an absolutely wonderful day!!
