In the mid-1600s, as gold from the Age of Discovery poured into Rome, two contrasting geniuses—Bernini and Borromini—spearheaded the Baroque artistic movement. During this three-hour tour led by an art historian, we will explore how the Baroque swept across Europe and shifted the relationship between art, power, and politics. By visiting three vital, intimate churches that still house these five-hundred-year-old masterpieces, participants will learn to decode architectural programs and draw comparisons to ancient and Renaissance art.
Our walk begins at Santa Maria della Vittoria to view Bernini’s Ecstasy of St. Teresa, a sculptural masterwork featured in a popular Dan Brown novel. This stop introduces the role of religious icons and patronage, explaining why so much era-defining art resides in churches. We then move down the street to Francesco Borromini’s San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane (San Carlino). A favorite of modern architects like Richard Meier, this church allows us to examine the finer aesthetic details that formed the basis of high Baroque art.
As we dive into the artists' biographies, we will see how their rivalry shaped our modern conceptions of genius. Bernini was the ultimate connected insider who ran a prolific studio, while Borromini was a solitary practitioner who labored for years on smaller projects. Though Borromini never achieved his rival's lifetime fame and ultimately committed suicide, many consider his work to be of a higher artistic quality.
Our final stop is Sant'Andrea al Quirinale, a church designed by Bernini and widely considered a Baroque masterwork. Here, amidst the social and political atmosphere of the 1660s, we will discuss core Baroque principles like movement, perspective, and grandeur. Ultimately, you will emerge from this tour with a deeper appreciation for Bernini and Borromini, having visited several lesser-known sites that house some of the most significant artwork in the world.
