Tour Description
Marvel at the wonder of Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano on a Context half-day tour. Walking along craters, we'll learn about the formation and history of Mount Etna and its relationship to the island of Sicily. Choose either a morning tour for the earlier risers or a sunset tour for those seeking the orange Sicilian hues. Your guide will be an agronomist expert or nature specialist.

For those interested in exploring a local winery after Mount Etna, try our Full Day Etna tour.
  • Mount Etna
  • 5 hours with an expert guide
  • Private car to and from Mount Etna
  • Optional picnic basket
Joined by an expert in Mount Etna’s volcanic history, we will start from your accommodation (in Catania or Taormina) before setting off for this spectacular mountain. On the way to Mount Etna, we'll pass through ancient villages as your guide explains how locals live in the company of a capricious Mount Etna. We will quickly familiarize ourselves with the most characteristic features of Mount Etna; its fauna, flora, perfumes, colors, and deep changes the volcano continuously influences on the surrounding landscape. Hopping back into your 4X4, along with your expert guide and driver, you will climb along an ancient lava flow before finally reaching one of the most breathtaking scenes that Mount Etna offers. If taking the afternoon tour, you will have time to absorb the sun setting over this magnificent and ancient landscape.

Please note: This tours runs either in the morning at 9:00AM or in the afternoon at 4:00 PM.

To continue your explorations of Sicily with Context, we recommend our Palermo in a Day tour.
What is a private tour?
Our private tours are limited exclusively to travelers in your party. They are designed to provide a learning experience that is completely tailored to you and your traveling companions. Private tours give you more flexibility with scheduling (you decide when the walk best fits in your trip), the ability to tailor your itinerary (we'll work to match the itinerary to the interests and dynamics of your group), and more personalized time with your guide.

Where do we meet? Where does it end?
We meet at your accommodation in the area of Catania or Taormina. Your route may differ according to your guide. Your confirmation email will have the exact meeting point details along with with a map.

What if it’s raining?
If the weather forecast is such that the hike can't take place in reasonable conditions, we will try to reschedule it.

Can children join this tour?
Yes, we can adjust the content to be more appropriate for younger learners.

Can we bring outside food on the excursion?
Yes, it is recommended to have water and some snacks for the excursion. We can arrange a picnic of local specialties to enjoy during your visit. Select this on check-out.

Roberto’s passion, understanding and knowledge of Mt Etna was wonderful, full of insight, and a synthesis of the many dimensions of Etna including history, economics, biology, myth and more, and included comparisons to other volcanoes, present and past. His enthusiasm and the variety of experiences he provided us will remain with us for a long time to come and opened within us a strong curiosity. He explained with detail and examples, and he connected ideas to build a strong foundation of appreciation of Etna and its place, yesterday and today. We were fortunate to have Roberto as our expert guide! Thank you!
