Great tour with Alan! Highly recommend!
Lawrence was absolutely fantastic — engaging, caring, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable. He gave us what I honestly think were the best two hours we could possibly have spent in the museum. What made him particularly exceptional was his ability to engage a child without ever dumbing down the material. He broke history into wonderfully digestible chunks, brought it alive with funny and memorable stories, and had a very clever way of helping my nine-year-old son retain what he was learning: throughout the tour, he would unexpectedly circle back and quiz him on things they had discussed earlier. My son loved it — and, more importantly, remembered it! We came away learning and laughing in equal measure. Beneath all the jokes and entertaining historical details, Lawrence’s extraordinary depth of knowledge and genuine passion for his subject were unmistakable. My son was also fascinated to discover that Lawrence is a working archaeologist, which made everything he was telling us feel even more immediate and real. Lawrence has that rare quality of being able to hold an audience completely. Everywhere we went, I noticed other children — and quite a few adults — gradually drifting toward us and listening to his stories too. He was also genuinely caring and attentive. He noticed before we even asked that we needed a water break and made sure we took one. It was a small gesture, but very representative of how thoughtful he was throughout. A truly exceptional guide. If you are visiting with children, I cannot recommend Lawrence highly enough — although the adults will probably be just as captivated.
