Itinerary Inspiration
Douro for Wine lovers: After enjoying a leisurely morning we’ll set out to explore the Douro Valley and taste its claim to fame - the Wine. We’ll enjoy a day of guided visits to local Wine Estates learning the difference between the wines and how they are made. We’ll then enjoy lunch along the banks of the Douro River taking in the impeccable view. In the afternoon we’ll take a private boat tour down the river, ending back at your accommodation.
Douro for history buffs: Our exploration of the Douro Valley will focus on the customs and history of the region. We’ll explore the routes of the Cistercians through the valley and their influence on the areas wine production. We’ll visit S. João de Tarouca a beautiful 12th century monastery, as well as the impressive Medieval Bridge of Ucanha. We’ll enjoy a local lunch right by the bridge before visiting the city of Lamego, famous for the great Sanctuary and Cathedral.

We can customize the excursion to focus on a particular theme. However, please note that since the Douro Valley is approximately 2 hours away from Porto by car, it's not usually possible to go beyond an 8 hour day. Please contact portugal@contexttravel.com to inquire about customization options.

Filipe was born in Porto, were he lived until he went to study Agronomy in Alto Douro University. After some professional experiences in both Lisbon and Porto, Filipe return to Douro Valley to be in charge of the XIX century family estate. Since 2002, he has been responsible for the tourism and the grape/wine production at his family estate. Today, Filipe divides his live between Porto and Douro, trying to expand his knowledge of each area and, luckily, getting the best of both worlds.

Francisco is a docent from Porto. He holds an MA in “Theater and Education” from Vigo University, Spain and a Post-grad in “Theory of Literature and Portuguese Literature” from Minho University, Portugal. He did undergrad studies in Religious Sciences at Porto Catholic University and also has a BA from Porto's University in Languages and Modern Literatures - Variant Portuguese Studies. He has taught various courses on the subject of education and has been responsible for organizing academic seminars and conferences. He enjoys his work as an interpreter and cultural guide in Portugal and is eager to show the array of delights that his city offers.

Maria João is Porto born and raised with a passion for the city. After working in the marketing area, she found her passion for wine and food and has never let it go. She has a WSET level 3 degree in wines, a cooking degree and many stories to tell. Get to know her combined passion for wine, food and Porto in a unique tour through Porto streets.
