We had a wonderful tour with Philip. A key planned element of the typical tour was not open so the tour did not end up being substantially 'underground.' With that said, Philip did a great job of adjusting and our time was well spent. Although and Englishman, Philip has been a Rome resident for decades and knows the city very well. As an archaeologist, his insights to the ancient remnants (spolia) that are still in use in the city were fascinating. The visit to the layers of history at Vicus Caparius was so interesting. This was the only 'underground' portion of the tour but possibly the segment that was closed would have taken us below street level. Philip's background is fascinating - he is an OG Context guide and very much an academic as well.
Richard was an amazing tour guide. He took us on a multi century multilevel look at Rome and helped us place ourselves within the context of history and social organization. His wealth and depth of knowledge was outstanding, and he was patient and valued the questions we were asking. we couldn’t have asked for a better tour of Rome archeology. He made a special effort to walk us on paths to try to avoid some of the crowds which are an unfortunate byproduct of Rome’s status as a tourist destination.
Paolo was the best tour guide we have ever had! Even kept my teenage daughters interested!
